Washington State Library's collection of Werner Lenggenhager's manuscript of historical markers and monuments of the State of Washington and photographs, circa 1949-1970.

This collection consists of the manuscripts for Werner Lenggenhager's Historical Markers and Monuments of the State of Washington. It includes all 10 chapters; supplements; index compiled by Lenggenhager in 1970 and 72 folders of 9.5 in. x 8 in. black and white photographs. The photographs consists of photo prints of historical monuments, cities, towns, buildings and other structures in the State of Washington, 1959-1967. The collection includes Monuments and Markers in Washington State which was compiled by Alta West, librarian of the Washington State Historical Society.

Werner Lenggenhager was known for his efforts to create a comprehensive photographic record of Seattle's architecture and monuments during the 1950s-1970s. Originally from St. Gall, Switzerland, Lenggenhager moved to Seattle in 1939. Some of his photographs of Swiss scenes were exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum in 1949, after which he began photographing local Seattle architecture and landmarks. Maud P. Mitchell was born about 1883 in Oregon. She married Chas. R. Mitchell and by 1920 they were living in Chehalis, WA. Charles was an assistant cashier at the bank. Charles had become a banker by 1930. Between 1957 & 1958 Charles passed away. And Maud passed away on 29 May 1960 in Chehalis, WA.
