Papers kept by Increase Sumner, Boston lawyer, associate justice of the Mass. Supreme Judicial Court, 1782-97, and governor of Mass. from 1797-99, containing notebooks of evidence taken and court dockets kept by Sumner as justice, 1782-94; his personal receipt book, 1774-98; and a notebook kept as a lawyer containing misc. legal notes and accounts, 1769-76. Also, a few misc. letters and documents, including a letter written to his wife in Apr. 1787 regarding the Shays' Rebellion trial, and his remarks given as governor on the dedication of the new State House (Jan. 1798).
