Scattered correspondence, accounts, legal and other papers of the Todd family of King and Queen County, Va., chiefly concerning church matters, family and social life, slaves, and the settlement of estates. Prominently represented are Baptist ministers William Todd, William Bernard Todd, and Joseph Robert Garlick. Items of significance include the account of the estate sale of Elizabeth Pollard Todd of "Fleetwell," King and Queen County, Va., mother of William Todd; family letters written to and tax receipts of Julia Robins Todd, last wife of William Bernard Todd; and the settlement by Marius Pendleton Todd, son of William Bernard Todd, of the estates of William Todd and William Bernard Todd, partially concerning the division of slaves. Items predating the Todd family include early land records of King and Queen and Essex counties, Va., and Bucks and Northampton counties, Pa. Of particular interest is the correspondence of George Taylor, Pennsylvania signer of the Declaration of Independence, concerning munitions production during the American Revolution at Durham Iron Works, Durham, Pa. Legal and other papers exist for several descendants of George Taylor who were involved in the Black Heath Coal Pits, Chesterfield County, Va.

George Taylor (1716 – February 23, 1781) was a Founding Father of the United States, Colonial ironmaster, and a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence as a representative of Pennsylvania. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
