The records document the administrations of Deans Francis H. Cunningham (director of the Division of Nursing, 1965-1966 and dean of the School of Nursing, 1966-1967), Inez G. Hinsvark (1967-1975), Mary E. Conway (1976-1980), Louise C. Smith (Acting, 1975-1976), Norma M. Lang (1980-1992), Mary Mundt (Acting, 1993-1994), Sharon Hoffman (1994-1999), and Sally Lundeen (1999- ). Most of the records date from 1968 to 1979; the small number of records predating 1967 are from the Milwaukee School of Nursing, which was a division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing. The records document the funding, accreditation, and development of the School of Nursing, the Instructional Media Program, the Nurse Utilization Project, and the School's Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects. There are numerous files on Milwaukee-area clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and Planned Parenthood because the school conducted classes and placed interns in the organizations. The records document the meetings between officials of the organizations and the school, the information presented at the classes, and the use of school interns. Also well documented is the development of courses taught within the school, although much of the information on individual courses is scattered throughout the collection. Records dealing with the relationship between UW-Parkside and the UW-Milwaukee School of Nursing are also included, documenting the beginnings of the model cooperative program, started in 1981, that allowed students to earn a nursing degree through UW-Milwaukee by taking courses at UW-Parkside. The records also document the planning of the Ph.D. program. There are annual reports, different committee reports, and meeting minutes in the collection as well.

Chapter 402, Laws of 1949, created the Board of Nursing and its administrative body, the State Department of Nurses (see WIHV85-A530). These were successors to the State Board of Health's Bureau of Nursing Education (see WIHV88-A58), and its Committee on Nursing Education (1921-1949) and Board of Examiners for Nurses (1916-1949).
