Bankhead recounts, from Memphis, Tenn. in October 1925 at the age of 78, the arrival in March 1865 of General Phil Sheridan's troops at her home "Birdwood," Albemarle County, Virginia. Also included are letters from Ada Pyne Bankhead to Hollis Rinehart, 2 September 1923; and M. Jack Rinehart, Jr. to Velora C. Thomson, 22 April 1982.

Sheridan claimed he was born in Albany in the State of New York, the third child of six of John and Mary Meenagh Sheridan, Irish Catholic immigrants from the parish of Killinkere in County Cavan, Ireland.
