Correspondence relating primarily to his business as a sutler, includes a letter about disposition of pay for deceased soldiers, sutler's responsibilities, supply orders, two letters addressed to Carrie Whitman McCauley, and some correspondence of daughter Ethel M. Harris (Mrs. Edward T.). Also includes biographies, 1845 Odd Fellows membership certificate from lodge at Manchester, N.H., 1865 Internal Revenue liquor license for Dakota Territory and Minnesota, various legal and financial papers, notes from Carrie Whitman McCauley's speech "Recollections of the Red River Valley," an inventory of all items in the McCauley papers, soldiers orders for 1864, and clippings. Some Harris family and McCauley family information included also.

Born at Merrimac, N.H., son of Daniel G. and Mary Noyes McCauley. Apprenticed as a machinist 1838-1841, moved to Saint Paul, Minn. in 1858. Arrived at Fort Abercrombie in 1861, worked as postmaster, post sutler, and agent for Northwest Express Company. In 1864, moved to Wilkin County, Minn., began farming and opened a trading post at the site of McCauleyville. Married Anna Trott, later married Carrie Whitman in 1879.
