Born at Merrimac, N.H., son of Daniel G. and Mary Noyes McCauley. Apprenticed as a machinist 1838-1841, moved to Saint Paul, Minn. in 1858. Arrived at Fort Abercrombie in 1861, worked as postmaster, post sutler, and agent for Northwest Express Company.
