A native of Scotland, James Grassick emigrated to Canada and taught school before studying medicine in Chicago. He moved to North Dakota in 1885, and practiced medicine in Buxton before moving to Grand Forks in 1905. His letters, sent to friends as Christmas greetings, included reminiscences of his life and practice. One letter has a detailed account of the 1892 typhoid epidemic in Grand Forks.
