The Marmon Motor Car Co. began as a millstone manufacturing company, Nordyke & Marmon Company, in Richmond, Ind. in 1851. It moved to Indianapolis in the 1870s, where the first car was produced in 1902. In 1911 the company produced the first car to win the Indianapolis 500 race. The construction firm of Latham & Walters was founded in 1909 in Indianapolis, Ind. by Charles Latham and Harrison Walters.
