Born on Dec. 10, 1937 in Decatur, Ill. and grew up on the Charles Shuman family farm in rural Sullivan, Ill. His father was Charles Shuman, who served first as president of the Illinois Farm Bureau then as president of the American Farm Bureau from 1954 through 1971, serving as a powerful and articulate advocate of the free market.
