Deposition of Nathaniel Fryer of Newcastle, N.H., testifying to Major Nicholas Shapleigh's ownership of land in Kittery in 1648 (document dated 6 May 1700); testimony of William Cotton of Portsmouth, N.H., that William Shelden was driven out by Indian attacks but later resumed living on the farm (document dated 22 Jan. 1729/30); deposition of Henry Libbee testifying that Godfrey Shelden lived on a farm in Scarborough, now in possession of Daniel Fogg (document dated 20 May 1740); and a deposition (17 Aug. 1731), of John Johnson testifying about an assault made on a woman by Joseph Gillison.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. Three months later it was sent to Harper's Ferry, Va., where it guarded the upper Potomac as part of Bank's division. From the description of Massachusetts Volunteer Militia records, 1861 [ma...
