Joyce Durand oral history interview [sound recording], 1997 January 27.

Durand discusses her rural childhood, and her early impressions of the Civil Rights Movement, which deeply affected her and her work as a teacher. She recounts her involvement in the Women's Movement, which was initiated when she began attending Atlanta NOW meetings. In discussing her relationship with NOW leader, Martha Gaines, and the splintering of the organization over the direction NOW should take, Durand considers the divisions within the Women's Movement. Durand provides interesting insight into how many of the issues of the Women's Movement were co-opted by the Right and placed under the rubric of "family values." She also considers why the term feminism has fallen out of fashion.
