Correspondence 1902, 1919; 1931-1962 [microform]

This series comprises correspondence written and received by the directing sister of the Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse and Training School, Baltimore, Maryland (BMD). It dates from 1902, 1919, and 1931-1962. Even though there is correspondence for four of the five directing sisters, the bulk of the correspondence is that of directing sisters Martha Hansen and Anna Melville. There are two types of correspondence: general correspondence conducted during the course of daily business and circular correspondence sent to BMD sisters. Record types include typewritten and handwritten correspondence with subject matter that included placement of deaconesses in parishes; questions from prospective deaconess applicants financial matters; pension and benefits issues; construction of an addition for retired sisters at the W. North Avenue motherhouse location; sale of the W. North Avenue property; dedication of a new motherhouse at the Ruxton, Maryland location; locations of the training school for the future Lutheran Church in America (LCA) deaconess community; and the future of diaconate in newly-created LCA. One subject of note, there are several letters from 1945-1947 from deaconesses in Germany detailing the condition of the diaconate at the end of World War II and the struggles faced by German deaconesses during the allied offensive towards the end of the war. Also of note, the correspondence to Directing Sister Sophia Jepson is from future directing sister Martha Hansen before she entered the diaconate. Subject matter in the circular letters pertains mostly to general personnel news shared with the deaconess community; news pertaining to the motherhouse itself, as well as news related to the BDW. Records are arranged chronologically.
