Letters, memorandums, reports, photographs, clippings, misc. printed items, etc. Bulk of material consists of Ayusawa's letters (1918-1941, 1946-1964) to Margaret Loring Thomas of New York City. Thomas and her husband Edward, members of New York Monthly Meeting, acted as Ayusawa's "parents" while he attended Columbia University. Ayusawa's letters are largely personal in nature, topics include his friendship with Margaret and Edward Thomas, his plans, travel, his work for ILO, conditions in post-war Japan and his work there, International Christian University (Tokyo), news of family and Friends, as well as his beliefs (pacifism, world cooperation, etc.); also copies of memorandums and reports by Ayusawa on labor and social conditions in England (1920), Austria (1921), his "Impressions of Japan, China and the Pacific Conference" (1932), "The world order and tolerance" (1932), and a letter (1932) intended for publication on the Manchurian situation; includes letters from Shūichi Harada, Seiju Hirakawa and from other members of the Ayusawa family, also family photographs, newspaper clippings.

Iwao F. Ayusawa, international labor specialist, Friend, was a graduate of Haverford College (1917) and Columbia University (1920). He worked for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for many years, first in Geneva, Switzerland and later as director of ILO's Tokyo branch office.
