Includes his letters (1894-1918), chiefly addressed to Henry Tatnall Brown, discussing Sharpless' theological views, various writing projects and Friends' Historical Association business; letterpress book (1884-1900) kept by Sharpless while Dean of faculty and President of Haverford; letters to Sharpless on the occasions of his inauguration (1887), resignation in 1917 and threatened resignations (1892, 1915); also sympathy letters (1920) to Lydia Cope Sharpless on the death of her husband; writings of Sharpless include editorials appearing in "The Westonian" (1909-1910), unpublished mss. on George Keith (1638-1716), Andrew Ellicott (1754-1820) and Friends and slavery. Also lectures on Quakerism given at Berkeley, Ca. by Sharpless in 1909; various other articles and addresses by Sharpless on topics related to education and Friends' history including biographical sketches of John Fothergill (1712-1780) and David Rittenhouse (1732-1796); photographs of Sharpless, his family, birthplace, and memorial tablet unveiled there in 1930; Haverford College calendar for 1987 "The Sharpless Years, 1887-1917."

Isaac Sharpless. Educator, born in Chester Co., Penn., graduated from Harvard in 1873 and received a Sc. D from the University of Pennsylvania in 1883.
