Isabel Elliott Howell papers, 1850-1868.

Chiefly correspondence, school records, and writings of Isabel Elliott Howell. The majority of the correspondence is from Mrs. Howell's uncle, George W. Elliott, an officer in the U.S. Navy. He describes various ports of call on the Great Lakes, in South America, and in the Mediterranean Sea region. School records consist of essays and examinations; Mrs. Howell's writings touch on subjects such as women's rights and moral discipline. Some genealogical information for the Elliott family is also included. Other family correspondents include Mrs. Howell's brother George B. Elliott, her husband Morton Boyte Howell, Melvina Tabb Elliott, and J.R. Garlick.

Morton Boyte Howell, born in 1834 in Norfolk, Va., was the son of Robert Boyte Crawford Howell and Mary Ann Morton Toy Howell.
