Papers, 1941-1982.

Collection contains mainly manuscripts of Nye's novels and other written works along with related correspondence, fan mail, research notes, contracts, scrapbooks and miscellaneous materials. There are also letters with other WWA members, photographs and other materials relating to the WWA, its board and the annual Spur awards. In addition there are Nye's articles on quarter horses, subject files and many photographs of horses, owners and jockeys.

Western Writers of America was founded in 1953 to promote literature pertaining to the American West. Although the founders wrote mainly western fiction, other members included historians and non-fiction writers. Nelson C. Nye was a Western writer originally from Chicago, Illinois. He worked as a ranch hand in Texas before owning a horse ranch in New Mexico. He studied under authors Laurence D'Orsay and Arthur Sullivant and wrote numerous Westerns under his own name and pseudonyms Drake Denver and Clem Colt.
