California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Joaquin Miller, born Cincinnatus Heine Miller and known as the "poet of the Sierras," was a Calif. poet and playwright. Juanita Joaquina Miller was the daugter of Joaquin Miller and wife Abbie Leland Miller. She was born in New York City in 1880.
