This collection contains 18 letters and 5 of the envelopes in which the letters were sent. Some are photocopies and some are original letters. Nine of the letters are from Robert R. Webb to his wife Elisabeth A. Webb dating from September 15, 1861 to May 15, 1862. Written first from Camp McDonald then later from his station at Portsmouth, Virginia and a General Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia, the letters deal mostly with matters of money. Robert R. Webb directs his wife in paying debts and the management of his land while he is away at war. Webb also describes life in the army, occasionally noting drilling practice and guard duty as well as sickness in the regiment. In May of 1862 he notes the Confederate Secretary of War's order to evacuate Portsmouth and Norfolk, Virginia and the subsequent Union control of these bases. Further correspondence to Elisabeth A. Webb describes the death of her husband, conditions of Confederate hospitals and directions for obtaining her husband's personal effects and remaining due wages. Letters from J.W. Nash in 1864 to his wife Sarah C. Nash describe general conditions and sickness in his army camp as well as the shooting of Mr. Coock, a soldier of the 56th Georgia Sentinel. Letters in subsequent years were exchanged between James M. Webb, W.G. Nash, J.W. Nash, Amanda Nash, E.E. Weaver and J.D. Foster and detail family news such as sicknesses and the announcement of births and deaths.

Robert R. Webb (?-1862) was married to Elisabeth A. Nash on October 25, 1855 in Dekalb County, Georgia. He achieved the status of 3rd Corporal in Company E of the 22nd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia as a Confederate soldier. In December of 1861 he was reduced in rank. During his time at the base in Portsmouth, Virginia he became sick and later died in a General Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia on July 12, 1862. Additional information about Robert R.
