The artificial collection documents through a booklet, correspondence, an invitation, programs, war savings bonds and other printed material the efforts of Atlantans, among them Margaret Mitchell, to support and commemorate the third and fourth iterations of the U.S.S. Atlanta, primarily between 1941 and 1946. To a lesser extent, the activities of these two naval cruisers are documented through a printed summary and naval communications. The collection does not contain material related to the first, second, or fifth vessels.

Margaret Mitchell (b. November 8, 1900, Atlanta, Georgia-d. August 16, 1949, Atlanta, Georgia), the daughter of Eugene M. Mitchell, was a prominent attorney. Her mother, Maybelle Stephens Mitchell, was active in the women's suffrage movement. Margaret Mitchell attended Atlanta public schools, graduated from Washington Seminary in Atlanta, and attended Smith College for one year before leaving college upon the death of her mother.
