Typescripts of letters from Ballenger to his family re his experiences with 26th Alabama Regiment and Hampton Legion, including his participation in the battles of Chancellorsville, Sharpsburg (Antietam) and Gettysburg. Collection includes letter, 19 Dec. 1861, H[ead]dq[uarter]s., Camp of Instruction, Tuscumbia, Ala., to Mrs. Ballenger, reporting news of camp life and activities and reporting the desertion of nine men; 24 Oct., Camp near Bunker Hill, Va., to Nancy [Ballenger], reporting rumors of small pox and commenting on the excessive adulation of the soldiers for Stonewall Jackson. Also including letter, 13 May 1863, Camp Santee, Caroline County, Va., to "My dear brother," giving an account of the battle of Chancellorsville and the deaths of General Jackson; 8 July 1863, Hagerstown, Maryland, to Nancy Ballenger, reviewing the Battle of Gettysburg; and various other letters expressing Ballenger's sense of defeat, his growing contempt for the war and the Confederate leaders, and his concern for the war's terrible effect upon the morals of the people.
