Chiefly correspondence, diaries, travel accounts, and estate, financial, and other papers, of the Atkinson and Smith families of Baltimore, Md.; together with correspondence and financial records of Baltimore Chemical Works, a wholesale firm dealing in drugs, paints, and other merchandise, operated by Robert Marsh Smith (1813-1893) and James E. Atkinson (d. 1851), and after Atkinson's death, Philip S. Chappell (1830-1875). Atkinson family members represented include James E. Atkinson and his wife, Hannah Smith Atkinson, their son and daughter-in-law, Matthew Smith Atkinson (d. 1906) and Eliza Blow Atkinson (d. 1931), and their grandchildren, Allmand Blow Atkinson, Lisa Blow Atkinson (1886-1974), and Matthew Smith Atkinson, Jr. (1881-1941). Smith family members represented include Matthew Smith (1779-1865) and his wife, Catharine Marsh Smith, their children, Hannah Smith Atkinson, Thomas Marsh Smith (1810-1877), Anthony Marsh Smith, Mary Marsh Smith (1823-1882), and Robert Marsh Smith, and his wife and son, Rebecca C. Jones Smith (1815-1860) and Matthew Smith (1842-1883).
