Personal correspondence, clippings, photos, and other papers, relating to Newton's interest in local, state, and national politics; correspondents include senators Edgar A. Brown and Burnet R. Maybank. Topical files document following subjects: Pee Dee Regional Council of Governments Advisory Committee on Aging; Tri-County Mental Health Center (Bennettsville, S.C.); baseball in the area, and use of Bennettsville, S.C., as site for minor league spring training of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team; history of Bennettsville (S.C.); history of Marlboro County (S.C.); Marlboro County Historical Society and its activities; Palmer Field in Bennettsville and its use as a site for a U.S. Army Air Forces flight training school during World War II, and a reunion held in 1981. Includes genealogical notes on the Adams, Guerry, McCall, and Newton families; and 35 photographs, including family portraits and scenes from the Augusta Military Academy (Ft. Defiance, Va.), where Newton was enrolled as a youth. Contains Newton's political correspondence, including three letters, May-June 1951, from U.S. Senator Burnet R. Maybank re the rejection of Bennettsville as a site for a U.S. air base or flight school; two letters, 7 and 15 Oct. 1954, from S.C. Senator Edgar A. Brown asking Newton to assist in a voting drive for the Democratic primary, "The drive is on to break up the Democratic Party and they don't mind crucifying me as the nominee for the United States Senate in order to do so"; and letter, 27 June 1974, from John L. McMillan, encouraging support for Bryan Dorn's gubernatorial candidacy. Also includes genealogical notes on the Adams, Guerry, McCall, and Newton families.
