Waters (1798-1880), their shipping activities, and family vessels trading with Asia, Europe, and South America; and correspondence of other family members, including plantation owners James Devereux Waters (1832-1892) and Clifford Crowninshield Waters (b. 1840), concerning accounts of life on Southern plantations during the Civil War. Includes information pertaining to the participation of Joseph Waters's schooner Abeona in the African slave trade; his management of the construction of the frigate Essex on behalf of the U.S. Navy; and papers of the schooner Swallow containing spoliation claims and correspondence from Daniel Webster concerning related negotiations.
