Correspondence, ships' papers, account books, legal documents, bills, receipts, and other materials, of James (1766-1846) and John (1796-1856) Devereux, chiefly relating to their shipping activities, trade with Europe, Asia, and South America in pepper, coffee, and sugar, and family ownership of privateer vessels during the War of 1812; and papers of other family members, including James Devereux (1806-1831). Among the ships' papers included are those of the ship Franklin, the first American vessel to sail to Japan (1799) which was commanded by the elder James Devereux.
