Correspondence (arranged chronologically), manuscripts of writings and poems by Rutledge and others; nature stories, criticism, photographs, tearsheets, clippings, and memorabilia re Rutledge's literary career, his dealings with publishers and literary agents, and his personal life, including restoration of family home Hampton plantation, near McClellanville, S.C. Twenty-nine letters, 1924-1958, from A.H. Rutledge chiefly addressed to his sister, Mary Pinckney Rutledge (Mrs. Paul) Stroman, and relate news of family and friends as well as details of Rutledge's literary efforts and busy lecture schedule. Several refer also to Hampton plantation and Rutledge's efforts to restore the ancestral home. A letter dated 15 Sept. [1937] thanks Mary for her support. A 26 Jan. 1924 letter discusses Rutledge's allegations of Herbert Sass stealing his story, "The Kings of Curlew Island," and submitting it to "The Saturday Evening Post." Letters from the years during which Rutledge taught at Mercersburg, Pa., allude to his feelings of displacement from his native state. Also including volume, 1972, compiled by Loulie L. Owens, listing biographical, bibliographic, and genealogical topics that appear in the correspondence; Hampton plantation, its owners, and other events such as hurricanes, opening of the home to tourists, 1941, and installation of electricty, 1956; genealogical information; list of books written by Rutledge; correspondents and nicknames; clippings; and literary criticism.

Charleston, S.C. newspaperman, writer, and historian. He was the son of George Herbert Sass (1845-1908), also a writer, and Anna Ravenel Sass. Sass served on the editorial staff of the News & Courier, a Charleston newspaper, and later gave up newspaper work to write stories, articles, novels, and other works, most of which concern the natural history and history of South Carolina.
