Dexter C. Martin papers, 1919-1982.

Correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and other papers documenting Martin's career as director of South Carolina Aeornautics Commission, promoter of the development (1941-1947) of Lexington County Airport (later Columbia Metropolitan Airport), and his tenure as member (1938-1972) and president (1940-1945) of the National Association of State Aviation Officers. Contains items of World War II era documenting Martin's promotion of the Civil Air Patrol (C.A.P.) and Civilian Pilot Training (C.P.T.) programs, as well as his interest in legislation re state versus federal control and the implementation of gasoline taxes; 2 documents, 1924, Martin's aviator's certificate and pilot's license, both signed by Orville Wright; and seven oversize scrapbooks, 1927-1964, containing photos and newspaper articles re Martin's early flying career and the development of aviation facilities in South Carolina. Oversize scrapbook Vol. I (1927-1936), re early pilots, wingwalkers, and other entertainers of early decades of aviation, the Mabel Cody Flying Circus, women pilots, including Margie Hobbs who preformed under the name "Ethel Dare," and others; Vol. II (1934-1964); Vol. III (1943-1946); and Vol. IV (1935-1947), re NASAO, Delta Airlines, and the "Breakfast Club" (Camden, S.C.); Oversize scrapbook Vol. V (1937-1947), re development of airport facilities in upstate S.C. Counties of Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg; Vol. VI (1937-1947), re development of Owens Field in Columbia / Richland County and the airport in Lexington County, S.C.; Vol. VII (1935-1949), re development of airports in several dozen other S.C. localities. Two volumes, 1919-1970 (letter size), consisting of clippings, photographs, and letters re the aviation career of pioneer stunt flyer Ethel Dare (Margaret Spears Hobbs); and 2 volumes (letter size, available onsite) consisting of Martin's index to his scrapbook volumes. Other correspondents include Solomon Blatt, Edgar A. Brown (1888-1975), South Carolina governors R.M. Jefferies (b. 1889), Olin D. Johnston (1896-1965), Burnet R. Maybank (1899-1954) and Ransome J. Williams, and various persons associated with Delta Air Lines and federal and state aeronautical agencies.
