A birthright Friend, John Comly was the son of Isaac and Asenath Hampton Comly of Byberry. In 1803, John married Rebecca Budd of Mt. Holly, New Jersey. Over the course of his lifetime, John Comly worked as a farmer, an educator, a surveyor, a conveyancer, and published a number of books, including a grammar, spelling book, primer, and reader.
