Elmer Ogawa papers, 1928-1971 (bulk 1942-1966).

Correspondence, biographical material, minutes, writings, financial records, notes, newsletters, ephemera, and other papers relating to Ogawa's career as a freelance photographer and civic leader of Seattle's International District, and to his involvement in the Japanese American Citizens' League, the Nisei Veterans Committee, and the Jackson Street Community Council. Correspondents include Tom Arai, Pal Cooper, Goldena Ogawa, and Kazuo "Joe" Tsujimoto. Also included are materials relating to Veterans of Foreign Wars Merrick Mariners Post 1310 (Merrick, New York) and American Legion, Cathay Post 186 (Seattle, Washington).

Photographer and civic leader Elmer Ogawa was born in Seattle in 1906 of Japanese and German-Irish parents. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Ogawa was a freelance photographer, especially of Seattle's International District, and a journalist. He was active in the Seattle Japanese American Citizens League, 1945-1971; the Nisei Veterans Committee, 1949-1969; and the Jackson Street Community Council, 1952-1966. Ogawa died in 1970. The Seattle Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League served as the voice of the Nisei (second generation Japanese).
