Began working for New York and Erie Railway in 1849, later worked for St. Louis and Pacific Railroad, and Northern Pacific Railway. Wed Helen Amelia Buckhout of Newburgh, N.Y. in 1857. Moved to Waseca County, Minn. in 1857. Purchased 6,000 acres of land near Leonard, N.D. in 1874 and named it Helendale Farm.
