Thomas Bodley papers, 1797-1832.

This collection contains correspondence, business papers, and land documents pertaining to the life and business affairs of General Thomas Bodley. Bodley's correspondence concern Whig party politics and public affairs of the era. Land documents, surveys, and business papers are also present. There are two letters written by Bodley to his wife during the War of 1812 and other letters to Bodley concerning the conflict and his duties with the army. Correspondents include Matthew Jouett, Robert Todd, Captain Charles Scott Todd, Theodore Hurd, Francis Johnson, Josiah Meigs, James Morrison, Thomas Todd, James Barbour, Lewis Landers, William Todd, John Fowler, and Ezekiel Howell.

Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year. These companies could be called to active duty by the governor in case of war, insurrection, or danger to public safety. In 1860 the militia was reorganized into the State Guard, the Enrolled Militia, and the Militia of the Reserve. ...

Bodley became one of the first commissioners for Fayette County, Kentucky. He also served in the War of 1812 and attained the rank of general in the Kentucky militia after the war.
