Some of the items have Suffolk connections, such as privy council letters to Suffolk justices, and possibly the collection was made by a Suffolk gentlemen interested in political news from home and abroad. Several concern Mary, Queen of Scots, the Earl of Essex and Raleigh. In various hands; probably written in Suffolk.

Frederick of Mömpelgard (d. 1608) became the Duke of Württemberg in 1593. Robert, Earl of Essex (1586-1601) was a favorite of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, and occupied a variety of military posts. Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, was queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567. Through her husband Francis II, King of France, she was also briefly queen consort of France (1559-1560). Mary was the daughter of James V of Scotland and through him the grand-daughter of Margaret Tudor, elder sister of Henry VIII; as such she had a legitimate claim to the throne of England as well.
