Papers of Francesc Duran i Reynals, 1936-1959 (bulk).

Chiefly documents Duran i Reynals' scientific activities, especially his researach on viral infection as a cause of cancer conducted at Rockefeller Institute, Roscoe B. Jackson Memorial Laboratory, and at the Department of Microbiology at Yale; also covers teaching, consulting, conference, and other professional activities, as well as his personal life. Includes mainly correspondence and grant files, and a considerable amount of other material relating to his research such as staff reports of experiments, 1953-1954; research and bibliographic notes; a laboratory notebook; photographs; and writings including manuscripts of papers, correspondence about publishing them, and reprints. Additional materials include personal and family papers, with some letters to Duran i Reynals' wife Marie, family letters (written in Spanish), and other items such as passports; teaching material, including course syllabi and lists of seminars; and other printed and manuscript material. Grant files contain correspondence with funding agencies, especially USPHS, the American Cancer Society, and Coffin Childs Fund; applications; annual and progress reports; and budgets and other financial papers.

Duran i Reynals (Univ. of Barcelona, M.D. 1925) was an assistant in the Department of Cancer Research at the Rockefeller Institute from 1928 to 1934 and research professor of microbiology at Yale's School of Medicine from 1938 to 1958. He was the first person to espouse the viral etiology of cancer. Duran i Reynals served as consultant to the Division of Bacteriology, U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and to the Committee on Growth of the National Research Council. From the descript...
