Contains letterbooks with departmental correspondence from 1892 to 1915, including letters to John Collins Warren and from the treasurer; minutes of meetings, 1900-1920; outlines and exams, 1896-1915; student grades; forms and correspondence concerning assignments for surgical rounds; statements and correspondence, 1906-1925, about financial matters; schedules for lectures; and related material. Also includes two volumes of minutes of meetings, 1902-1911, of the staff of the Laboratory for Surgical Research. Later records contain correspondence, evaluations, and schedules in office files of Edward D. Churchill and Oliver Cope which pertain to students, and the curriculum for Harvard Medical School surgical courses at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1934 to 1957.

Dr. James Jackson and Dr. John C. Warren initially sought funds for a hospital in Boston, Mass. which would also be made available to student s of the Harvard Medical School for clinical training. It was incorporated in 1811 as Massachusetts General Hospital, and in 1817 Jackson and Warren were appointed as acting physician and surgeon, respectively. The first patients were admitted in 1821.
