Lovina's diary provides brief daily descriptions of the wagon journey and is supplemented by comments of her daughter, Florence, who was eight at the time of the trip. Also included are genealogical materials about the Blacow and John Meirs Horner families, and a map of the Weeks' trip.

Lovina Walker Weeks came to California (1859) with her husband Alfred Weeks and their two daughters, Esther (13) and Florence (8). They travelled from Athens, Michigan to Irvington, Calif. in the charge of Lovina Weeks' brother, Jared Tuttle Walker. Jared Walker (b. 1822) had first come to California in 1852.
