Charles Derleth, Jr. was born in New York City on October 2, 1874, the son of Charles and Annie (Taubert) Derleth. His grandfather, Michael Joseph Derleth, a German, Czech, or Austrian cabinetmaker, emigrated to New York City before 1865. He and his three sons, Charles, Ferdinand, and John, operated the firm of M.J. Derleth and Sons, Cabinetmakers at 279 Rivington St. in the Bowery from 1870 to 1882. After early studies in Germany, Bailey Willis attended Columbia University and was awarded the degree of Mining Engineer in 1878 and of Civil Engineer in 1879. In 1884 he began his career with the United States Geological Survey, working chiefly in the Pacific Northwest. He made geological research trips to China and Argentina, before coming to Stanford University in 1915 to succeed John C. Branner as head of the Department of Geology.
