Scrapbook, 1874-1908.

Consists of a scrapbook kept by Jacob S. Blumenthal of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Includes handwritten poetry, literary and news clippings, and a few drawings and photographs. Clippings of note include information regarding President James Garfield's assassination and the ensuing trial of Charles Julius Guiteau (1841-1882) and the extensive flooding in Tennessee in 1902. Some loose documents are also enclosed in the scrapbook, including a 1908 passport of Mr. Blumenthal's, signed by Elihu Root.

Born in Freeport, Illinois, Charles J. Guiteau was connected with the Oneida Community but later sued them. He was admitted to the Bar of Illinois but mostly worked as a bill collector. James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S.
