William Poindexter Moore letters to his mother [manuscript], 1895-1896.

Moore writes to his mother at Bellvue, Bedford County, Va., describing boarding at Crockford's including a fire in one of the rooms, his destructive roommate, the landlord's drinking, and theft by the washwoman; playing football and breaking a man's nose [by accident?]; a stay in the University infirmary for an infected knee, his medical roommate's keeping an "old heart" to study; a $10 bet won by a student for running naked in 16 degree weather three miles up to the reservoir and back; an invitation to dine with Professor Harrison and petitioning him not to put three 8-page essays on the final examination; the baseball team; warm showers in the gymnasium; damage from a severe wind storm; and testifying on behalf of a student arrested for wrestling on and blocking a sidewalk. His letter of November 2, 1895 mentions the October 27, 1895 Rotunda fire. In addition, he sends farming advice, enquires after family members, requests money and sends an assurance that he goes to church and doesn't get drunk often. The collection also contains a final grade report and a letter from W.G. Christian to Moore's mother on his knee injury.
