Helen M. Martin papers, 1841-1974 1931-1958.

MS 93-71 consists of papers of Helen Martin, geologist, educator, and employee of the Michigan Department of Conservation. She created many of the maps, which focus on Michigan geology. She also collected some historical maps and documents about surveying. All were significant to her work with the Michigan Geological Survey. The series of articles Martin wrote reflect a versatile writing style that made scientific concepts easily understandable. Her bibliography shows how extensively she published and lectured. The major part of this accession is the collection of color slides. Martin was an excellent photographer who documented many natural features in Michigan. Includes maps, articles, biographical/activites of Helen Martin, historical materials and photographs (color slides).

Helen Mandeville Martin (1889-1973) devoted her life to the conservation of Michigan's natural resources. A native of South Dakota, she attended the University of Michigan, intending to be a writer, but changed curriculums and earned an A.B. degree in chemistry and geology. From 1908-1916, she taught high school geology and physiography in Battle Creek, Michigan. She earned her master's degree in geology and chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1917.
