Collection, 1786-1912 ; bulk (1861-1865).

Contains over 200 items, the bulk of which is in Series I and consists of Civil War correspondence between Reuben A. Scott and his fiancee/wife Mary Catherine Saufley (known as Mollie). Scott's letters describe camp life, preparation for battles, and his assignment to search out and arrest deserters; Mollie's letters center on family news. A few documents relevant to the correspondence are also included (ex. copies of Scott's muster rolls). Series II contains miscellaneous letters (mostly from the 1850's & 1860's) from members of the Whitmer, Ewing, Brown, Graham, Scott and Saufley families, including letters from R.A. Scott and M.C. Saufley to relatives. Also filed here are various miscellaneous documents (ex. Scott's will and obituary). Series III contains M.C. Saufley's daybook and a pamphlet, "The Soldier's mission in the crisis of 1861," and originals of clippings photocopied and placed with the letters they accompanied. Series IV consists of photographs, four cased and one mounted (three of R.A. Scott, one of Mollie); series V contains letter envelopes.
