Letters relating to the accusation of drunkenness against General William F. Smith, 1862.

A collection of letters written to Vermont Congressman Justin Smith Morrill relating to the accusation leveled against General William F. Smith of drunkenness during the battle of Lee's Mill, Virginia, on April 16, 1862. The collection includes a letter written by Lieutenant Colonel Lewis A. Grant of the 5th Vermont Regiment stating that Smith was not drunk during the battle. Included is a letter from General Smith to Senator Morrill dated April 30, 1862, in which among other things, he wrote that Morrill had uttered a foul slander against him when Morrill stated that Smith had been drunk during the battle. Other letter writers testify to Smith's drunkeness. The collection also contains newsclippings covering the incident.
