The collection consists of three letters. The first, dated March 3, 1876 is from Richard Malcolm Johnston in Pen Lucy, Waverly, Maryland to Reverend P. H. Mell in Athens, Georgia. It informs Reverend Mell of the death of Mrs. Hooper Carroll and discusses other personal matters. The second is from Reverend P. H. Mell to Richard Malcolm Johnston in Baltimore, Maryland. In it, Mell sends his condolences upon the death of Mrs. Carroll and memorializes her quite movingly. The third letter is from Richard Malcolm Johnston to Edmund Clarence Stedman in Bronxville, New York, and contains condolences on Stedman's illness and hope for an early recovery. Richard Malcolm Johnston was an author, lawyer, and educator. He was born near Pawellton, Georgia on "Oak Grove" plantation. He was law partners with Eli W. Baxter in Sparta, Georgia. In 1844, Johnston married Mary Frances Mansfield. He was elected chair of rhetoric and belles-lettres at the University of Georgia in 1857; he remained in Athens until 1861.
