Margaret Freeman Cabell papers, 1910-1982

The Collection consists of the papers, memorabilia, photographs, scrapbooks and miscellania of James Branch Cabell, Margaret Waller Freeman Cabell, Ballard Hartwell Cabell, John Brightwell Freeman and John Middleton Freeman. The majority of the collection is composed of correspondence between Mr. Cabell and his friends. There is some cross-over of correspondence between individuals who were clients of Mrs. Cabell's (Waller Freeman) interior design business who later became friends and individuals who were friends of the Cabells but also corresponded as representatives of organizations or companies. In such instances, the letter has been placed in the series most closely corresponding to the intent and content of the correspondence and cross references are listed when known.

Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial book, Jurgen (1919), a fantasy set in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (pronounced Pwa-tem). The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice contended the book was obscene. A trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame.
