Records of the Early Massachusetts Records, Inc., a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1970 for the purpose of microfilming and making available for research the early records through 1830 of Mass. towns still held by the towns. The records of the corporation date back to 1967 when Richard D. Brown, the originator of the idea and eventually the clerk of the project, began seeking support. Under the terms of the incorporation, a consortium of interested historical agencies and libraries invested in the project initially and served on the Board of Directors of the Corporation. The project microfilmed the records of the six towns in the Lexington-Concord area (1971), Gloucester (1973), and eventually created a microfilm set and guide to the records of Middlesex County (1976). The corporation dissolved in January 1993. (Cont) The records include minutes; general records, primarily correspondence with the towns, microfilmers, and potentially interested individuals and institutions; and permissions from the towns to film their records. In addition to Richard D. Brown, additional correspondents include Stephen T. Riley, president of the Mass. Historical Society and the Early Massachusetts Records project, and Philip J. McNiff.
