Quaker Dean of Swarthmore College. Born in Dutchess County, NY, Elizabeth Macy Powell married Henry Herrick Bond in 1872. Her husband died in 1881, leaving her with a young son. Founded by members of Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia Yearly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Swarthmore College was incorporated in 1864 under a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
