Robert Stanton account book, 1755-1788.

Account book of Stafford, Connecticut, physician Robert Stanton. Stanton recorded his patients' names, some locations, the treatment received, and occasionally medicines provided. Among the medicines mentioned are spermaceti, Turlington's Balsam of Life and Bateman's Drops. While Stanton performed many common procedures, such as extracting teeth, he also lists more unusual ones. In 1756 he charged a patient for opening a bronchotomy tumor. Stanton often traveled long distances, including one trip of 26 miles. His patients were in the towns surrounding Stafford, Connecticut, as well as Springfield, Brimfield, and South Hadley, Massachusetts.
