James Moore Wayne (ca.1790-1867), Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, was born in Savannah. After graduating from Princeton in 1808, he studied law in Savannah and was admitted to the bar in 1810. During the War of 1812 he was an officer in the Georgia Hussars, a local cavalry organization. Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason.
