AlsS, 1877-1878, London to B.B. Wiley.

In the first of these two letters, Martineau thanks Wiley for sympathy on his wife's death and comments on current state of society and especially financial difficulties. In the second, he discusses the payment of national debt in gold or silver coin; with regard to the political situation in Eastern Europe, Russia is considered less "hopeful for civilization" than Turkey as a governing power and more potentially disruptive in the area, though the latter not ideal. War has made resolution less likely.
