Diary, 1814 June-1824 Aug.

Journal kept by Mary Gosling during 6 trips taken between June of 1814 and August of 1824. Places visited include Oxford; the coast of Sussex and Hampshire; French Flanders; Wales; Ireland; Dorset; and Devon. Author described paintings; antiquities; architecture; historic sites and ruins; landscapes; and accommodations. Many entries include distance traveled daily. She described her impressions of Waterloo (including villagers' accounts of the battle); the foundries of Colebrook Dale; the making of bank notes in Dublin; a diving bell at Devonport; a tour of the steamship Britannia; and a visit to Sarah Ponsonby and Lady Eleanor Butler at Llangollen.

Sarah Ponsonby was the orphaned daughter of Chambre Brabazon Ponsonby. She lived an unhappy life with relatives in Woodstock, Ireland. She met Lady Eleanor Butler in 1768. Since both women shared a mutual love of the arts, and were both unhappy with their lives, they decided to live a quiet rural life. They left Ireland and they set up home in "Plas Newydd", in Llangollen, North East Wales, in 1780. Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, the British couple known as the Ladies of Llangollen.
