John Edwards Memorial Collection, ca. 1930s.

Transcriptions of radio shows by the Pickard Family or by individual family members. Most of the recordings were made from the border station XERA, in Villa Acuna, Mexico, and date from the late 1930s. Others are commercials and auditions recorded by Audio Video Recorders in Los Angeles, Calif., several Hollywood recording studios, and the Inter- Nation Advertising Agency in Del Rio, Tex. The Pickard Family shows are typical of early live radio shows, consisting of skits, old-time songs and tunes, hymns, and gospel music, as well as some popular music, parlor tunes, and tin pan alley and cowboy songs. Some of the shows are organized around a plot. Kerr Mason Jars sponsored many of the shows, and their ads are incorporated into the performances.

18 sound recordings.
