The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795. The governing body of the University, from its founding until 1932, was a forty-member Board of Trustees elected by the General Assembly. The Dialectic Society of the University of North Carolina was the first of the university's two student debating and social clubs. It was established as The Debating Society in 1795, but changed its name the following year. The debating societies amassed sizable libraries and functioned as the campus student government for over a century.
